❝she was a beautiful dreamer.
the kind of girl who
kept her head in the clouds,
loved above the S T A R S
and left regret beneath the EARTH
she walked on.❞
in days that had long since past, sirius would have dreaded the sight of that vibrant red hair and the perfectly polished emblem pinned to her uniform. even now, his first reaction whenever they cross paths was to act as if he were innocent of whatever crimes that she may have suspected him of. for the lily evans that everyone knew had spent the last two years as a model prefect, surprising absolutely no one when she was promoted to the oh-so prestigious position of head. the shock value was only added in when the news broke about who would be her counterpart. that person being james, his fellow marauder and known partner in crime. the pair of them had always been thick as thieves and only recently had james dulled down his antics in facade of maturity. it was all very dull in his personal opinion, but he did try being supportive.
his initial instinct to panic was quickly forgotten when he caught the look that she was giving him. that look was one that he’d take credit for inventing, if given the chance. there was a troublesome look about her, only made much worse by the very recognisable item sticking out from behind her ear. sirius was unable to mask the self satisfied smirk that stretched across his lips as he finally made sense of what was happening. over the course of the previous school term, the number of times that he had found himself in trouble was significantly less than years prior. only now did he realise the real reasoning behind this. he’d wanted to think that it was because age had made him far more inconspicuous. however, that was a statement so far fetched that he actually laughed about it.
the real reason that he was getting off scot-free was simply because he wasn’t being turned in. back when his detentions had frequent enough to be considered an extracurricular activity, the vast majority of his write ups had been from one particular source. not that he could place too much of the blame on her, really. if the tables had been turned and she were the one being outright malicious to people he considered his friends, there would’ve been hell to pay. they’d both grown since then, and even though sirius hadn’t changed much in his opinions, he was rarely mischievous with vicious intent anymore. maybe that had led to an unspoken agreement between the pair of them. as long as sirius wasn’t being a bully, then lily would take a page from the same book remus had and leave him to his own devices.
“better than alright, i’d say.“ he smiled broader still, the corners of his eyes wrinkling with amusement. at first, the hug took him even longer to process than he change in attitude toward him. after just a moment though, he had his arms wrapped around her in return. it was quite natural and although sirius wouldn’t admit it, comforting in a way he didn’t know that he needed. “come now, dear lily. it’s only been a few days and you think i’m already up to no good?“
his words only made her melodious laugh return, the ginger haired girl pulling away from the embrace only far enough to shoot him a teasing look of disapproval. ❝any less from you and i’d be worried. what was it this time then? poking fun at the first years? charming mrs. norris so that every time she meow’s she turns different colors? i’m sure filch would have a hoot with that bit.❞ lily tousled his hair playfully, finally breaking free from their embrace and fetching her cigarette once more.
there were very few people she felt comfortable enough smoking around, the list was actually narrowed down to three of her closest friends, marlene, remus (on the odd occasion) and sirius. it was a nasty habit, she was well aware but in many ways it was the only thing that relieved her of the stress that bottled up within her, pressing against her chest until she could hardly breathe. little did her friends know her habit had taken a turn for the worse over the last couple of months and she was now blowing through two or three packs a week.
before it was always a matter of her meaningless quarrels or prefects duties that drove her towards her stash of cigs carefully tucked under her robes but lately she just needed to smoke to get through each day, the crushing sadness of her father’s absence making it difficult to even breathe. of course no one had any clue as to what was going on with her and she was confident enough to presume that sirius would be none the wiser so she placed the cigarette between her pink lips and lit it, letting out a soft sigh of relief once she inhaled the wispy smoke. ❝so what the bloody hell is it with your disappearing act? i haven’t heard from you in quite some time and i can’t say im too happy about that. i heard from ja-potter that you had been in egypt. do tell how was that experience? you didn’t tear down any pyramids with your reckless nonsense did you, muggles are rather fond of those.❞

Sirius ran as quickly as his human feet would carry him. Bobbing and weaving between the bodies of unsuspecting students, who had started filling out into the hallway after the bell rang. It was nearly perfect timing, serving as cover for Sirius while he very narrowly escaped Filch. The seventh year rounded a corner at full speed, his trainers slipping and sending him veering off course by several feet. He dropped down low in an effort to stop himself from sliding any further and with a thud, Sirius hit the ground. Before the man had the chance to catch up, he was scrambling to his feet again.
Furious, incoherent shouting, came from just a ways down the corridor. Stopping short at the next turn, the idea for Sirius to duck into a classroom and hide occurred to him suddenly. It was a mad dash to the nearest door without being spotted again, passersby purposefully moving out of the way now to clear a path. Most of them didn’t know what was going on. They had no clue that in only the first few back in school, someone would’ve had the nerve to transfigure the office furniture of the caretaker into different farm animals.
However, those people clearly weren’t well acquainted with Sirius, now standing on the opposite side of a door to a classroom he thought was empty. He draws out his wand, uttering a quiet spell to lock himself in. Once he’s sure that the coast is clear, he’ll venture back out. Finally, his adrenaline starts to dull, which leaves him panting against the wall. When realising he’d not alone as he previously though, the colour drains from his face. Staring at him with a puzzling expression is Lily, of all people. Her ‘Head Girl’ badge pinned visibly on her uniform. “Oh,” Sirius says casually, despite his still ragged breathing. “Hi, Evans. I didn’t see you there.“
from the second she stepped off the platform onto hogwarts grounds lily felt like she was being forced to put on an act. a brave face, a nonchalant smile, the admirable head girl everyone expected her to be and merlin forbid she didn’t deliver. it was all rushing by at hyper speed, the greetings, meetings with the new prefects, getting the first years in order for the sorting feast, saying hello to old friends and avoiding those she didn’t consider friendly any longer, it was all bloody EXHAUSTING. of course, she didn’t falter, her bright smile glued onto her lips though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. until she just couldn’t take it any longer.
so she ran.
over the years lily had become quite the agile little minx, there was a reason why the troublesome redhead was hardly ever caught misbehaving and it served her well that afternoon as she evaded any familiar faces a she scurried towards the third floor, slipping into an empty room where she could finally BREATHE. with a low groan, the red head lowered herself onto one of the empty chairs and pulled out a fresh pack of cigarettes she’d kept concealed within her robes, shaking out a stick before raising it to her lips and fishing out her trusty lighter. just as she was about to light the cigarette a fumbling clamour caught her attention and the last person she would have ever imagined to see was suddenly leaning back against the shut door, his laboured breaths eliciting a soft giggle from the girl.
lily stepped forward, tucking the unlit cigarette between her ear and her fiery locks. she felt relief wash over her, his friendly face erasing any sort of anxiety she had bottled up moments prior. in many ways, sirius black was much more useful than a deadly smoke stick. ❝you alright there black? you look pretty out of breath. you wouldn’t happen to be running away from trouble now would you?❞ she teased, a playful gleam shining in her eyes as she stepped forward to pull him into a tight embrace.
